The phrase “back to school” conveys horror for
some youngsters, but in many cases, pure joy for parents. Whether your summer
has been chock-full of exciting and exhausting adventures or spending quality
time at the cottage, it is now time to get back to the groove of routines.
Let’s see what is
important on the Back to School Checklist.
- School supplies:
Dig out that email sent out at the end of the last school year to print
out the school supplies list. Purchasing
these items sooner than later will help you avoid crowds and the stress of last
minute shopping.
- School wear: Before you start shopping for new school wear, let the kids put on a fashion show to see what fits, what can be handed-down, or handed out.
- School bags: Have you checked the condition of their school bags? Are they torn, irreparably stained or too small? When you are purchasing a backpack for your student, make sure it is a perfect fit. If you buy one that is too large so that you don’t need to get one every year, you could be causing your child some serious back strain. If the bottom of the backpack lands squarely on their butt, their center of gravity is compromised. You know the look – every time they take a step the backpack jumps up! The backpack should sit high on the upper back, with strong wide adjustable straps, and land just below the waist.
- School bedtime routines: How can you help your child adjust to school-day bedtime and encourage rest? Massage of course! Massage helps calm the nervous system by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system which promotes rest and sleep. Studies report that 2 x 20 min massages a week are enough to show significant improvement in ADHD children.
- School lunch: If you haven’t been on top of the summer meal plan with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, it’s time everyone gets the proper nutrition to keep up with new schedules, studies and sleep. Stock up on fresh to frozen seasonal vegetables to use in smoothies for breakfast when time is short. Make your own granola snacks with ingredients you recognize and enlist their help to make them personalized. Watch the sugar content in juices and other snacks. Plain yogurt with a packet of raisins or nuts will go much further. Fat is not the enemy, but sugar is!
