Autumn of Red and Gold, Apple and Spice

The days are getting shorter, and the chill in the air is obvious as you dig out that big comfy sweater or extra blanket. For some, the cooler temperatures of fall are a welcomed relief from the hot and humid climate of the summer, while others are counting the days for summer’s return.

Of all the Canadian seasons, autumn is by far the most colorful season and it is an exquisite feast for the senses.  Our eyes get to gaze upon the red, gold, amber and yellow trees preparing to hibernate for the winter.  Our ears get to hear the dry crunchy foliage that pile up on the sidewalks and walking trails. Our nose gets to smell the harvesting of apples, corn and pumpkins, and we get to taste the sweet delicacies made with cinnamon and nutmeg.

We welcome the fall season by the foods we harvest and eat, the bodywork necessary to adjust, and the celebrations we observe.

The combination of honey, apples and pomegranates
adorn Jewish family dining room tables as they celebrate Rosh Hashanah
in September along with red and golden beets tzimmes, and spicy carrot kugel.  The recipes and traditions of this High Holiday are observed globally as the Jewish Communities rejoice for the unfolding of a new and blessed year.

The Thanksgiving Day table is filled with turkey and ham, sweet potatoes, squash and tart cranberries. The scent of apple and spiced pumpkin pies, fill the air and so begins a sensory explosion before the white blanket snuffs it all out. Celebrating and giving thanks for all our abundance in health, wealth and prosperity is not only meant for this particular day, but everyday.  By living with an attitude of gratitude your life is continuously rewarded.

According to Chinese medicine, Fall is the season to give ourselves extra attention and self-love.

The fall season is a time to return inwards in preparation for the more quiet and reflective season of winter.
We prepare the body by eating warmer foods, sleeping a little longer and incorporating specific body or energy work to help the lungs and large intestine adjust to what is happening outside of us.  Massage and Reiki energy therapies will not only nourish our body, but our mind and spirit as well. Book some time today!

Spending time in nature and absorbing the new energies that come with every season, should be incorporated into our wellness routine.

The beautiful Laurentians region of Quebec is the finest way to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of autumn in Canada. Activities and festivals with themes around the harvest will keep you entertained as will the beer-inspired
St. Adele’s Oktobierefest and other autumn inspired events

If your idea of autumn is more one of relaxation and introspection, make your way through these towns to visit Chez Mina's Cottage where you can spend time hiking, fishing, camping or sitting by the fire pit watching the stars reflect upon the lake.
